Dr. Robert Calonico

Conductor & Musical Director

Musical Director and Conductor of the Danville Community Band, joined the band in the fall season of 2007 and was appointed Conductor in January 2009.


Robert is Director of Bands at the University of California, Berkeley where his duties include directing and arranging for the Cal Marching Band, and conducting the University Wind Ensemble. Prior to his appointment at Berkeley, Robert held faculty positions at Dominican College and Terra Linda High School in San Rafael, California.


He is a graduate of St Mary’s College High School in Berkeley and holds a B.A. in music from UC Berkeley. He earned his teaching credential and a M.A. in clarinet performance from California State University, Hayward. He is completing his doctoral dissertation in music education at Boston University. With over forty years of professional experience, he has performed with the Oakland East Bay Symphony, Oakland Ballet, California Symphony, Berkeley Symphony, Berkeley Repertory Theater, many San Francisco based Broadway show productions including Phantom of the Opera and West Side Story, Natalie Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Maria Muldaur, James Brown, Tex Beneke and Harry James Orchestras among others.


Mr. Calonico is a past-President of the Bay Section for the California Music Educators Association (2006-08). He lives in Hercules with his wife, Sharon, and they have two grown children.

Dr. Lawrence Anderson

Founding Conductor & Artistic Director

Dr. Lawrence E. Anderson, and his wife, Jan, conceived and began the Danville Community Band in September 2001. A lifelong music educator and band director, Dr. Anderson is Director of Bands and Supervisor of Teacher Education in Music, Emeritus, University of California, Davis.


He began his career as Director of Music at Miramonte High School in Orinda. Dr. Anderson is a graduate of Acalanes High School in Lafayette, California. He earned a B.A. degree at the University of California, Berkeley, an M.A. at San Francisco State University, and a Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley. While a student at U.C. Berkeley, he was elected Student Director of the California Marching Band, played in the University Concert Band, and later directed the Cal Alumni Band for several years.

His articles have been published in numerous professional journals including the Music Educator’s Journal, the Journal of Band Research and the Journal of Research in Music Education. He also writes a monthly column, “Notes on Key,” for Alive magazine. Dr. Anderson is a member of the National Association for Music Education; California Music Educators Association; Phi Delta Kappa, a national organization dedicated to research, leadership and service to education, and a member and former Director of the Association of Concert Bands. He now holds the titles, Founding and Artistic Director of the Danville Community Band and he plays clarinet in the band. Dr. Anderson lives in Danville, California with his wife Jan.
