Dr. Robert Calonico
Musical Director and Conductor
Dr. Robert Calonico, Musical Director and Conductor of the Danville Community Band, joined the band in the fall season of 2007 and was appointed Conductor in January 2009.
Dr. Robert Calonico is Director of Bands Emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley, having retired in 2018 after twenty-eight years of service. Upon his departure from Cal, he was awarded the Berkeley Citation, one of the University’s highest honors. Prior to his appointment at Cal, Robert held faculty positions at Dominican University and Terra Linda High School (San Rafael, CA).
A professional musician since 1972 (clarinet & saxophone), Robert has performed with the Oakland East Bay Symphony, Oakland Ballet, Berkeley Symphony, Lamplighters, Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, Natalie Cole, Maria Muldaur, Lou Rawls, Joan Baez, James Brown, and Harold Jones among others, and a number of San Francisco based Broadway shows. In 2018, he was appointed conductor of the Golden Gate Park Band.
Robert holds degrees from UC Berkeley, CSU Hayward, and Boston University. He is a member of the National Association for Music Education, College Band Directors National Association, American Federation of Musicians, and is a past-president of the California Music Educators Association, Bay Section.
Dr. Lawrence Anderson
Founding Director
Dr. Lawrence E. Anderson, and his wife, Jan, conceived and began the Danville Community Band in September 2001.
A lifelong music educator and band director, Dr. Anderson is Director of Bands and Supervisor of Teacher Education in Music, Emeritus, University of California, Davis. He began his career as Director of Music at Miramonte High School in Orinda. He served as a Counselor at Ygnacio Valley High School in Concord, a Supervisor of Music Education at Sonoma State University and a Student Teacher Supervisor at Chapman University in Walnut Creek. Dr. Anderson is a graduate of Acalanes High School in Lafayette, California. He earned a B.A. degree at the University of California, Berkeley, an M.A. at San Francisco State University, and a Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley. While a student at U.C. Berkeley, he was elected Student Director of the California Marching Band, played in the University Concert Band, and later directed the Cal Alumni Band for several years.
His articles have been published in numerous professional journals including the Music Educator’s Journal, the Journal of Band Research and the Journal of Research in Music Education. He also writes a monthly column, “Notes on Key,” for the local Alive magazine. Dr. Anderson is a member of the National Association for Music Education; California Music Educators Association; Phi Delta Kappa, a national organization dedicated to research, leadership and service to education, and a member and former Director of the Association of Concert Bands. Dr. Anderson is a 2019 Arts Recognition Award recipient from the Art & Culture Commission of Contra Costa County. He also has a recently published book, Notes on Key, a masterwork of music education in a single volume. Dr. Anderson holds the title, Founding Director of the Danville Community Band. He lives in Danville, California with his wife Jan.
